O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. Her family raised her by their parents in Wheaton located in Illinois and was graduated in 1981 with a diploma from Wheaton-North High School. Her appearances in commercials before shifting into Los Angeles in 1986. The first role she had was modeling as a model for Montgomery Ward. She also appeared in several advertisements. She made her debut on the big screen in the romantic comedy of 1988 She's Having a Baby, and later was cast in recurring character on ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. The actress has also appeared as a guest and appeared on independent movies and television shows. Donna Abandando was her first big role on ABC's police thriller NYPD Blue. The role of the tall, blonde squad secretary was played from 1993-96. For each of those years, she received an Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance by Drama Series.
