Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. While she was a small girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessional disorder, and also suffered from anxiety due to the word"association. Ford was intrigued by the field of acting during her teens and joined National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she would not be a good choice for this school. Ford decided to apply instead to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however, by that time she already had made her TV debut on a 1991 episode of Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate was seen in television shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre has led to her joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate received recognition for her comedy stand-up and has been added to her repertoire in 1996.
